Meet Dr. Williamson

Dr. Williamson studied kinesiology and basic sciences prior to entering dentistry and earned bachelor's degrees (BPE and BSc) and, later, a master's degree (MSc) in the area of Exercise Physiology. He subsequently went on to complete his doctor of dental surgery (DDS) degree with Distinction at the University of Alberta in 1993.

Following two years of general dentistry practice in Calgary, Dr. Williamson returned to the University of Alberta to pursue further study in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. He completed his orthodontic specialty training (MSc in Orthodontics) in 1998. His thesis research on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) status in adolescents was published that same year. He completed the orthodontic examinations of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, which qualified him as a Fellow of the Royal College and a Certified Specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

Following graduation, Dr. Williamson held an academic appointment in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, where he taught in the undergraduate and graduate programs and participated as a member of the Cleft Lip and Palate Team at the University of Alberta Hospitals. After relocating to Calgary to establish Westside Orthodontics in 2000, he continued his academic appointment at the University on a part-time basis. He currently holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Alberta where he instructs in the Graduate Orthodontic Program.

Dr. Williamson is passionate about the specialty of orthodontics. He is an active member of local, national and international professional organizations, including the Calgary and District Dental Society, the Alberta Dental Association, the Canadian Dental Association, the Canadian Association of Orthodontists, the American Association of Orthodontists, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, the World Federation of Orthodontists and the Alberta Society of Orthodontists. He is a past president of the Alberta Society of Orthodontists and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists.

Dr. Williamson enjoys spending time with family and friends and enjoys a wide variety of outdoor recreational pursuits.
